The text of another leaflet I wrote when I was a Media Officer for the Anti-Privatisation Forum (APF). This was for a march led by APF affiliate, the Kathorus Concerned Residents Committee (KRC).  KRC was based in the big blue collar townships of the East Rand. If I recall correctly, this march was in Katlehong township. I have removed the now-defunct contact details.

ALL KATHORUS RESIDENTS: MARCH ON THE COUNCIL!

Evictions and electricity cut-offs have affected more than 38, 000 people in Kathorus. These things are violating our human rights. That is why we must stand up and fight.

We have the right to a decent life, to jobs and to basic services. Instead, we are faced with forced payments. We are faced with huge electricity bills, cut-offs and property attachments.

We have the right to decent family housing and decent living conditions. Instead, we are faced with evictions. We are told we must pay high bills or have or houses taken. We are told we must move our families into smaller houses, “rightsizing”!

Things are going from bad to worse. Electricity and houses are being privatised (taken over by rich people to exploit the working class and poor).

WE SAY NO! NO TO EVICTIONS! NOT TO CUT-OFFS! NOT TO PRIVATISATION!

The Kathorus Concerned Residents’ Committee is calling on all residents to join a march on Mayor Bavumile Vilakzai of the Ekurhuleni Metro Council

PLACE TO MEET: Katlehong stadium

TIME: 10 MAY 2001 9 am

STOP EVICTIONS NOW! HOUSING IS A HUMAN RIGHT!
